Cord Blood Banking and Stem Cell Research-Cord Blood Xtras

Development in Stem Cell Expansion Technology

  • Worldwide interest in cord blood actually began in 1972 when Ende M. and Ende N. published their paper “Hematopoietic transplantation by means of fetal (cord) blood: a new method.” In the publication, they raised the possibility of exploiting the immature immune system present in cord blood to avoid the occurrence of GvHD, one of transplantation’s most common problems. However, it was only after the 1974 publication by Knudtzon S. in the medical periodical “Blood” that scientists started paying serious attention to cord blood as a source of hematopoietic stem cells.

  • In October 1988, the first cord blood transplant was performed on a boy with Fanconi anemia at the Hospital St. Louis, Paris with cells collected in North Carolina, USA. The donor was the boy’s newborn sister. The cord blood stem cells were shipped overnight to the laboratory of Dr. H.E. Broxmeyer who, with a group of other doctors proceeded to carry out what was then a revolutionary method of treatment for cancer. Today, more than 17 years later, the recipient is alive and cured of the hematologic manifestations of Fanconi anemia.

  • As of today, more than 6000 cord blood transplants have taken place around the world.

  • In April 2006, the New England Journal of Medicine stated that cord blood banks in 21 countries currently store about 170,000 units of cord blood.

  • If a family, especially the children of the family, is of mixed ethnic background, it may be impossible to find an adult bone marrow donor who is a perfect match. It is in such cases that cord blood from even a PARTIALLY matched sibling would be invaluable should the family ever need it.

  • Storing cord blood samples in multiple cryovials allows for the release of part of the sample to be thawed, expanded, and used in treatment, while the remaining samples are left in storage for future use. The following table is proof of the amount of research being channeled into stem cell expansion
