What are CordMSCs?

CordMSCs are short for umbilical cord derived mesenchymal stem cells, found in the Wharton’s jelly (a soft connective tissue within the umbilical cord). CordMSCs are the most primitive and youthful source of MSCs that can be ethically obtained from the human body. Their remarkable capability to transform into various cell types (bone, heart, nerve, cornea, fat, and cartilage cells) allows for treating significant tissue injuries as they can repair and regenerate these organs.

As of 27 March 2025, there were 1,344 clinical studies on MSCs, with rising clinical registrations in this field. This exponential increase since the first trial in 1995 offers confidence in the effectiveness of mesenchymal stem cell therapy.

CordMSCs benefit everyone, as HLA matching is not required for mesenchymal stem cell therapy. However, the ideal and recommended source of CordMSCs is from a family member.

Processing CordMSCs

CordMSCs storage involves the collection of the umbilical cord right after birth. It is then sent to the laboratory to be cleaned, selected and cut.

Prior to storage, CryoCord’s CordMSCs undergoes lab-induced cellular dissociation and expansion so that the characteristics, viability, and cell count can be determined. Treatments often required much more cells than those obtained from cord tissue. Therefore, cell multiplication prior to storage is critical to ensure enough CordMSCs when needed.
